Top Japanese Anime: The Best Series by Genre

Top Japanese Anime

Anime is the word for animation produced in Japan, and it is often mistaken for a single genre. It is a medium, just like live-action film, and it covers everything from children’s adventures to horror, romance, sport, science fiction and adult drama. That range is why lists of the most popular anime look so different depending on who compiles them.

Most series are adapted from manga, Japanese comics that are read from right to left, or from light novels and video games. Anime spread outside Japan from the 1980s onwards and exploded globally with streaming. Today titles such as Demon Slayer and One Piece are among the most watched shows of any kind in the world.

Instead of one ranking, this guide groups the top Japanese anime by genre. Pick the category that sounds like you and start with the first title in it.

A Quick Guide to Anime Categories

Japanese publishers group manga and anime by target audience, and these labels still help:

  • Shonen: aimed at teenage boys; action, friendship and training arcs. The most popular category worldwide.
  • Shojo: aimed at teenage girls; romance, relationships and personal growth.
  • Seinen: aimed at adult men; darker themes and more complex plots.
  • Josei: aimed at adult women; realistic relationships and working life.

These are marketing labels, not rules. Plenty of adults love shonen series, and many seinen titles have huge teenage audiences.

Action and Adventure (Shonen)

Attack on Titan

Humanity lives behind enormous walls to escape giant humanoid Titans, until the day the walls are breached. What starts as a survival story grows into a complex political drama about war, freedom and cycles of hatred. The series ran from 2013 to 2023, animated by Wit Studio for the first three seasons and by MAPPA for the final season. Few anime have an ending as debated.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Based on Koyoharu Gotouge’s manga, which ran from 2016 to 2020, the anime began in 2019. Tanjiro Kamado joins the Demon Slayer Corps after demons kill his family and turn his sister Nezuko into one of them. Studio ufotable’s fight animation set a new standard for television, and the film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train became the highest-grossing film ever released in Japan.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Yuji Itadori swallows a cursed finger to save his friends and becomes host to the most powerful curse in history. MAPPA’s adaptation, first aired in 2020, combines brutal fights with sharp humour and a memorable cast of sorcerers.

Hunter x Hunter (2011)

From Yoshihiro Togashi, also the creator of Yu Yu Hakusho, this Madhouse series follows Gon Freecss as he takes the Hunter Exam to find his missing father, alongside Killua, Kurapika and Leorio. It starts light and becomes one of the most inventive and darkest fighting anime ever made, with a power system fans still analyse.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Two brothers who paid a terrible price for trying to bring their mother back with alchemy search for the Philosopher’s Stone. Studio Bones’ 2009 series is a complete, tightly plotted story from start to finish, which is why it regularly tops fan rankings.

My Hero Academia

In a world where most people have superpowers called Quirks, Izuku Midoriya is born without one but still dreams of becoming a hero. When the great hero All Might chooses him as his successor, he enters a hero academy. Studio Bones began the series in 2016, and it is an easy entry point for fans of Western superhero stories.

Psychological Thrillers and Mysteries

Death Note

A brilliant student finds a notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it and decides to cleanse the world of criminals, while an eccentric detective known only as L tries to catch him. Madhouse’s 2006 adaptation is a cat-and-mouse thriller built on clever reasoning, and a favourite first anime for people who do not usually watch animation.

Monster

Naoki Urasawa’s story follows a Japanese surgeon in Germany who saves the life of a boy who grows up to be a serial killer. Slow, adult and gripping, the 2004 Madhouse series plays like a European crime novel.

Steins;Gate

A self-proclaimed mad scientist accidentally discovers a way to send messages to the past, with consequences that spiral out of control. The first episodes are deliberately slow; the payoff is one of the best time-travel stories in any medium.

Fantasy

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Most fantasy stories end when the demon king is defeated. Frieren starts there. An elf mage who outlives her human companions sets out to understand the people she barely got to know. Madhouse’s 2023 adaptation is gentle, melancholy and beautifully animated, and quickly became one of the highest-rated anime of all time on fan databases.

Mushishi

A wandering expert travels through rural Japan helping people affected by mushi, primitive life forms that cause strange phenomena. Each episode is a quiet, self-contained folk tale, perfect for slow evenings.

Comedy and Parody

One-Punch Man

Saitama is so strong that he defeats every enemy with a single punch, which leaves him bored and searching for a real challenge. The 2015 first season, animated by Madhouse, is both a spectacular action show and a sharp parody of shonen clichés.

Spy x Family

A spy must build a fake family for a mission, without realising that his adopted daughter is a telepath and his new wife is an assassin. Heart-warming and very funny, it is one of the best anime to watch with family members who are new to the medium.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

Two brilliant student council members are in love, and each is too proud to confess first. Every episode turns that stalemate into a battle of strategy, with some of the best comic timing in anime.

Romance and Drama

Your Lie in April

A piano prodigy who can no longer hear his own playing meets a free-spirited violinist who pulls him back into music. It is a moving story about grief and performance with exceptional classical music scenes.

Violet Evergarden

A former child soldier becomes a letter writer who helps other people put their feelings into words, while trying to understand the last words her commanding officer said to her. Kyoto Animation’s visuals are among the most detailed in television animation.

Magical Girl and Psychological Drama

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

It looks like a classic magical girl series. Madoka Kaname and her friend Sayaka meet Kyubey, a small creature who offers to grant any wish in exchange for becoming a magical girl. The 2011 series by Studio Shaft soon shows the cruel price of that contract, and it redefined the genre.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Hideaki Anno’s 1995 series about teenagers piloting giant robots against mysterious Angels is also a raw exploration of depression and loneliness. It changed the course of anime and remains essential viewing.

Science Fiction

Cowboy Bebop

A crew of bounty hunters drifts through the solar system in 2071, set to one of the greatest soundtracks in television, composed by Yoko Kanno. Sunrise’s 1998 series is stylish, adult and often the first anime recommended to newcomers.

Sports

Haikyu!!

A short but determined high school player joins a volleyball team trying to return to glory. Production I.G’s series makes every match feel like a final and has turned many viewers into volleyball fans.

Horror

Parasyte: The Maxim

Alien parasites take over human hosts, but the one meant for high school student Shinichi only reaches his right hand. The two form an uneasy partnership in a story that is violent, thoughtful and surprisingly emotional.

Where to Watch

Most of these series are available on legal streaming services such as Crunchyroll and Netflix, though catalogues vary by country. Watching legally supports the studios and animators who make anime possible. If you prefer reading, most titles began as manga, often with extra story that the anime does not cover.

There is no wrong place to start. Choose a genre you already enjoy in films or books, try three episodes, and if it does not click, move on to the next title on the list.
